Clinical Observation of the Intestinal Malrotation



Abstract
The congenital anomalies are one of the major cause of the death in neonate, and the intes-tinal malrotation is a common cause of duodenal obstruction and a life threatening midgut volvulus in the neonate as well as in the older child.
A series of 13 cases with intestinal malrotation treated in the Dept. of General Surgery, St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College, between Jan. 1969 and Jan. 1977 are presented.
The most frequent age group was below 1 year and male was predominant.
The frequent clinical symptomes were bile stained vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and the most.reliable x-ray examination was the upper G-I & small bowel series.
The operative finding showed intestinal malrotation only (6 cases), intestinal malrotation and midgut volvulus (3 cases), intestinal malrotation & sigmoid colon volvulus (1 case) and intestinal mairotation with anomaly (3 cases).
The associated anomalies were congenital diaphragm of the duodenum (2 cases)` and bilat-eral indirect inguinal hernia (1 case).
The Ladd¢¥s procedure were done in 8 cases, Ladd¢¥s procedure & midgut volvulus reduction were done in 3 cases, Ladd¢¥s procedure & other procedure were done in 4 cases.
The postoperative complications were mechanical ileus (2 cases) & diarrhea (1 case), but, there were no surgical mortality.
